1970 a momentous year for our community. A few compassionate animal lovers rallied together to change the treatment of homeless and stray animals in the area. Spurred by an incident of inhumane treatment of a stray dog, a group of concerned women founded the Manitowoc County Humane Society. A shared vision to create a shelter to protect and care for companion animals in a humane and compassionate manner drove these volunteers to secure our 501 (c)(3) status.

In 1974, the efforts of this volunteer group started to pay off. With funding in hand from local foundations, community donations, and the Manitowoc County, we purchased 6 acres of land as the future site of our physical shelter.

In 1976, their dream was fully realized, and our facility was constructed. The doors opened to welcome any and all companion animals in need of shelter.

In 1990, the original, Manitowoc County Humane Society, Inc updated their name to better serve our mission. Lakeshore Humane Society, Inc. ensures that companion animals outside of Manitowoc County can also find shelter here.

In 1996, our shelter was bursting at the seams. To accommodate the influx of pets that needed our help, we expanded our walls. Our facility now boasts 5,000 square feet, dedicated to the humane treatment of all companion animals that enter our building.

Today, we operate within the same four walls and carry on the original vision from 1976 to provide shelter, protect, and care for companion animals in a humane and compassionate manner. We serve over 1,500 pets in need each year, and on average, 3 homes per day open their hearts and doors to a new pet from our shelter. Many aspects of our organization may have changed over the years, but our goal has remained the same.
