With nearly 1,500 lost and homeless animals coming through our doors each year, volunteers are essential in helping LHS carry out its mission. Caring for our animals is definitely an around-the-clock job, 365 days a year. As a result, there are many different ways to volunteer onsite at LHS.

Here is a list of several volunteer opportunities at LHS. On-the-job training is available with all opportunities. And, of course, if there is something you are interested in helping with that isn’t on this list, please feel free to contact us and share your ideas!

Customer Service

Do you enjoy working with people? Are you passionate about animals and want to help them find the right new home? As a customer service volunteer, you will assist in keeping the lobby tidy and presentable for our customers. You will help enforce best practices to keep our animals safe, such as one cat colony room per visit and proper hand sanitization between animals. You will ensure that all animals are being treated kindly and respectfully. You will also assist customers with basic procedures, such as guiding them to information about the animals and visitation, helping those who bring in donations to the shelter, and direct questions an LHS staff member.

Cat Socializing

If you’re a feline fanatic, help us socialize our cats! As a cat socializer, you’ll give the cats attention, brush them and help our shy residents come out of their shells.

Dog Walking & Socializing (Must be 18 years old)

If you’re passionate about canines, help make sure our dogs get the attention and exercise they need! As a dog walker and/or socializer, you will provide our canine companions with brushing, play time and general companionship either outside or in our visiting room. For dog walkers, you will sign in and out with the dogs and walk with them on our trails behind the building or on the sidewalks. Remember to always bring a bag for waste and respectful of our residential neighbors. As some dogs are still working on their manners and behavior, LHS staff will help you identify which dogs are available and ready for some quality walking and bonding time.

Dog Trainer (Must be 18 years old)

Dogs with specific behavior issues need experienced handlers. If you are a certified trainer, enrolled in a certified program or have at least one year experience as a trainer at a training facility, we need your help! References, certificate and on-the-job LHS training will be required.

Grooming

Want to help LHS residents look their best for adoption? We are always in need of experienced groomers. Our medical care specialist and supervisors will help identify which resident animals need to get ready for their close up! References and/or certificates will be required.

Foster Home Care (Must be 18 years old)

Morning Cleaning Assistant

It takes a village, as they say, to help keep everything at LHS sanitized and clean for the health of our animals. As a morning cleaning assistant, you will help get the day started right for our animals! Activities include washing dishes and litter pans, doing laundry, cleaning cat cages and dog kennels, scrubbing hallways, cleaning windows and more. Help make LHS sparkle!

Afternoon or Evening Cleaning Assistant

It takes a village, as they say, to help keep everything at LHS sanitized and clean for the health of our animals. As an afternoon or evening cleaning assistant, you will clean windows, wash dishes and litter pans, and do laundry. You may also be asked to refill water containers and scoop litter boxes. Help make LHS sparkle!

General Maintenance

Love the outdoors? Have a school or church group that would like to tackle a project together? Help us maintain our building and grounds! Mother Nature always leaves room for projects such as cutting grass, weeding, raking leaves, shoveling snow and chopping ice.

Petco Volunteer

Do you enjoy sharing your love of animals with the community? On specific dates, LHS is invited to bring adoptable animals to the Manitowoc Petco store. As a Petco volunteer, you will represent and promote the shelter in a positive manner, and maybe help one of our animals find their new home!

Fundraising Events

Do you love throwing a good party? Or, perhaps just attending a good party? If you like being where the action is, join us on event day! We have several major fundraisers each year, including our Walk for Kindness, Putting for Pets and others that require many volunteers to handle registration, concessions and more. Join us and we’ll put you on the VIP list!

Community Service Program

For students interested in completing their volunteer service project hours, or for court-ordered volunteer hours, LHS offers a combination of all of the above volunteer opportunities. The hours are spent where there is the greatest need.
